THE
MAN SAMMY OTOO
The name Sammy Otoo has over the last
two decades become a household name in many educational institutions
particularly the 2nd cycle ones mainly because of the invaluable
books he has written and published for schools.
Born over 60 years ago, at Abakrampa in
the Central Region of Ghana, he had his elementary school education at his
hometown and proceeded to Fosu Teachers Training College from 1965-1969. From
1970-1975, he studied privately and obtained his ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level
certificate before entering the University of Cape Coast where he obtained his
B.A. (Hons) and Diploma in education.
Having taught in some 2nd
cycle institutions like St. Augustine’s College, Amissano Seminary and Aggrey
Memorial School, all in Cape Coast. He left for Nigeria where he also taught in
many schools in the Oyo State.
As an accomplished scholar, a social
scientist and educationalist, Sammy has an extraordinary zeal for human
resource development. His avowed principle in life is that “there
is good potential in every human being which must be harnessed for the
development of the individual’s personality and for societal development”. It is this passion for education and
people-oriented principle that motivated him to organize classes for SSSCE
(Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination) in 1993. He single-handedly
administered the school from its infant stage. The huge success recorded in the
first few years of the school’s existence attracted people from all walks of
life, teachers, nurses, pastors, bankers etc. who wanted to improve on their
O/Level, A/Level and SSSCE grades.
As an entrepreneur and a strong
character with the zeal to succeed at all times, SAMMY OTOO worked assiduously
to establish Sammo Senior High School
in 1997 at Bakaano in Cape Coast. With quality teaching and dynamic leadership
of Sammy, the school started producing a lot of students for the various
universities in Ghana. The ‘remedial’ department
has in no doubt put back smiles on the faces of thousands of students over the
period.
Mr Sammy Otoo did not rest on his oars
and as a visionary; he soon realized that there was the need to expand the
facilities for the ever-increasing number of students. It was against this
background that a parcel of land was acquired at Yamoransa, a suburb of Cape
Coast, for the building of another ultra-modern Senior High School to
accommodate over 2000 students.
His passion for education and services
to humanity again manifested itself when in 2006 moved by inadequate
accommodation in his alma mater (University of Cape Coast); he decided to put a
120 room private hostel to accommodate some of the students of the University.
Mr Otoo’s cherished ambition and vision
is to build a modern private University to offer admission to many students who
cannot get access to the country’s limited Universities.
His heart desire to bring ‘education’ to
the children of the poor is also manifested in several Educational Endowment
Funds and Scholarship Schemes for the brilliant but needy students he has
instituted. He is currently the Vice-Chairman of Abura-Asebu Kwamankese
District (AAK) educational fund catering for the brilliant but poor students in
the district.
As a philanthropist and a devoted
Christian, he is well known for offering financial assistance to many Church
projects and has won several national
and international awards for his efforts.
Perhaps, it was in the recognition of
his selfless service to humanity and leadership that the country honoured him
recently with a ‘National Award’ in Education.
